# Claude Cowork's built-in browser changes how beginners use web tasks with AI

Claude Cowork now includes a dedicated browser, letting beginners offload web tasks without sharing their personal browser data.

Claude Cowork now handles web tasks in its own isolated browser, removing a major friction point for beginners learning to delegate work to AI. The built-in browser lets Claude navigate sites, fill forms, and extract data without touching your personal browsing session.

## How the built-in browser works  

The new feature allows Claude to operate a separate browser instance within the Cowork desktop app. When you ask Claude to complete a web-based task—like gathering research or processing invoices—it opens this dedicated browser rather than asking for access to your Chrome or Firefox tabs.  

Key differences from the previous setup:

Use the built-in browser for tasks on sites you don’t personally visit (vendor portals, research databases). Stick with Claude in Chrome when working on pages already open in your personal browser (Gmail, Notion).

## Why this matters for beginners  

1. **No more permission anxiety**  
   Previously, granting Claude access to your browser felt like handing over car keys to a valet. The built-in browser is more like a separate vehicle Claude drives—it can’t rummage through your glove compartment.  

2. **Simpler task delegation**  
   Tasks like "Find three recent studies about AI tutoring" no longer require you to first open a research database. Claude handles the entire workflow start-to-finish.  

3. **Safer credential management**  
   Banking, email, and single sign-on sites are excluded by default. You must explicitly choose to bring over login cookies from your personal browser (supported on macOS/Chrome/Edge/Firefox and Windows/Linux/Firefox).  

## When to use which browser method  

The system automatically chooses based on your setup, but you can override it in Settings → Cowork → Preferred browser:  

- **Built-in browser** (new default)  
  Best for:  
  - Research tasks  
  - Vendor portals you rarely visit  
  - Public data collection  

- **Claude in Chrome** (existing extension)  
  Best for:  
  - Actions in your open CRM/email  
  - Continuing work on a page you’re actively using  
  - Tasks requiring your specific account permissions  

## Security considerations  

The built-in browser inherits the same protections as Claude in Chrome:  

- Reviews Claude’s actions against your original request  
- Blocks known malicious sites  
- Limits how many steps Claude can take on a page

## Getting started  

Rollout began August 26, 2026, reaching:  
- **Pro/Max/Team** plans first  
- **Enterprise** admins can enable organization-wide  
- Desktop apps only (macOS/Windows/Linux beta)  

The web/mobile apps can trigger the desktop browser if the app is running. Without the desktop app, Claude falls back to Chrome extension behavior.  

## What this enables  

Concrete examples for new builders:  

1. **Automated data collection**  
   "Compile last quarter’s sales figures from our Shopify analytics" – Claude logs into the dashboard and extracts the numbers without exposing your admin credentials.  

2. **Form processing**  
   "Submit these 50 scholarship applications to the university portal" – Claude handles the repetitive form entries while you review the submissions.  

3. **Research workflows**  
   "Summarize the key points from these 10 medical journal links" – Claude fetches and reads each paper without mixing them with your personal browsing history.  

## Limitations to know  

- No mobile support yet (except via remote desktop control)  
- Can’t access browser extensions you rely on (Grammarly, LastPass, etc.)  
- Enterprise networks with strict proxies may block the built-in browser  

The update makes Claude Cowork feel more like a true collaborator rather than a tool that occasionally borrows your browser. For beginners, it removes a major mental hurdle in trusting AI with web tasks.
