Skill

Skill: A packaged set of instructions and tools that gives an agent a new ability on demand.

Not the same as CLAUDE.md

CLAUDE.md is loaded into every session whether it is needed or not. A skill’s description is always visible, but its body loads only when the skill is used, which is why a procedure belongs in a skill and a standing fact belongs in CLAUDE.md.

Where it bites

Claude decides when to use a skill from its description. A vague description means the skill stays unused when you expected it, or turns up when you did not, however good the instructions inside are. When it matters, run it yourself with /skill-name.
